Event: The Passing of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos

Today, the Omani government announced the passing of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and a three-day official mourning period.  The Embassy has issued a public statement expressing condolences to His Majesty’s family and to the people of the Sultanate of Oman.  The Ruling Family Council is convening to select the next Sultan.

There are reports of significant road closures and an increased police presence.  Embassy personnel have been advised to demonstrate respect and sensitivity in public during this profound time of mourning.  The Embassy will be closed to the public January 12 and 13. All routine American Citizen Services appointments will be rescheduled.

Travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive messages and to make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
