This week U.S. Embassy Muscat hosted an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) pre-departure orientation for five professionals working with the National Museum and Ministry of Heritage and Culture. The IVLP participants will travel to the U.S. from January 26 – February 7, 2020, to meet a variety of museum and archivist professionals to discuss mutual U.S.-Oman commitment to preserving culture and history. The IVLP participants will meet with their counterparts at a variety of institutions, including the National Archives and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., the Annapolis Maritime Museum in Maryland, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The participants will immerse themselves in their specific areas of interest and connect with people working in their fields at the highest levels in public and private museums. The group will have conversations about stewardship, education, and curation. The trip will offer the opportunity to exchange insights and to spend time focusing on how American and Omani museums can enhance the visitor experience, utilize new technologies in preservation, and implement best practices in business and revenue management. While visiting multiple major U.S. cities and looking at museums though a global lens, these five will explore museum strategies and cultural heritage with their American counterparts. Discussions between U.S. Embassy officials and H.M. Sultan Haitham (in his role as Minister of Heritage and Culture) led to this exchange.
